Mosul dam : danger of collapse

Iraq's largest dam is in danger of collapsing and killing tens of thousands of people in a massive flood, according to a US report. It is formerly known as Saddam Dam. The US inspector for Iraq reconstruction on Tuesday said a $27m US project had not improved the Mosul Dam on the Tigris river in northern Iraq, which could buckle under water pressure and let loose a 20-metre wave. The report from Stuart Bowen, the special inspector-general for Iraqi construction, cited assessments by the US army corps of engineers, which called the current probability of dam failure "exceptionally high". His report also included a letter to Nuri al-Maliki, Iraq's prime minister, from the US ambassador to Iraq and the chief US military commander, which said: "A catastrophic failure of the Mosul Dam would result in flooding along the Tigris river all the way to Baghdad."
The dam was completed in 1984, but it was built on soluble soils that move and create cavities under the dam and its banks. Those cavities must be grouted to prevent collapsing.

here is some pictures of mosul dam "SADDAM DAM"

freaky is not it?

  1. I'm very sorry to hear of the failure of the effort to repair the dam.

I am at a loss to even imagine what can be done at this stage.

Do you have a personal plan to evacuate?

  2. Iraqi Dam 'At Risk Of Collapse'.

Mosul Dam has been a problem for engineers since it was built in 1984
The largest dam in Iraq is at risk of an imminent collapse that could unleash a 20m (65ft) wave of water on Mosul, a city of 1.7m people, the US has warned.
In May, the US told Iraqi authorities to make Mosul Dam a national priority, as a catastrophic failure would result in a "significant loss of life".

Small Danish firm gets early warning system order in Iraq

HSS Engineering will supply a warning system to alert the inhabitants of Mosul if the weakening Mosul dam 50 km north of the city should collapse and send a tidal wave down the Tigris

  3. We are now in big danger , and the officials in iraq say their is no such danger and nothing is going to happened...
But we know that this is really serious and they should not lie about this...

  7. Well, the problem of Mosul dam has been existed since 80s but it has been exaggerated for some reasons. Maybe for political reasons or perhaps some companies conspire to create (actually exaggerate) this problem so they may win contracts of reconditioning, I think.

However, it is just a hurricane in a teacup, as they say. :)

BTW, I don't thik this photo is for Mosul dam.

  8. I thought so at the beginning , but as people says here that the problem is real ,, we have some relatives living near mosul Dam said that this is all not real and there is nothing to fear , and now we are in hurricane in a teacup, as you say. :)

    I hope nothing will happened.

BTW, the snake appear in mosul dam and we heard too much about it - but a saw picture look like it it say that the snake appear in africa as I remember - :D

  9. Well, I heard about ten totally different stories about this snake and you know what, I did not believe any of which. :)
